Pool domain and short name
Every deployed application gets web addresses with no setup. The platform builds them from a pool domain, a domain the platform owns. You need no Domain Name System (DNS) setup for them. To use your own domain instead, see Domains.
A pool address has this form:
{service}.{deployment}.{label}.{pool domain}
The label is the application's slug unless you choose another. The platform picks a pool domain at random on the first deploy.
Changing the label and the pool domain
Open the application and select Pool label. Any member can read the page. Only an owner or admin can change it.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Label | The name used in place of the automatic one. Use lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens. It can't start or end with a hyphen. Leave it blank to go back to the automatic label |
| Pool domain | Which pool domain the application answers under. Leave it on Automatic to keep what the application has. Moving to another domain changes every pool address of the application. The old addresses stop working |
A label is unique within one pool domain, not across the platform. The page refuses a label in these cases:
- Another application already uses it on that pool domain.
- It already answers on the pool domain, even if the platform has no record of it.
- It reads as an official platform name.
A new application that hasn't deployed yet has no pool domain. Choose a label now, and it applies at the first deploy.
A running application restarts
The platform writes addresses into the routing of a revision when it places that revision. If the application is already running, saving shows a confirmation. The platform restarts it with the same code, so the new label takes effect now. Nothing rebuilds. Decline, and the change applies at the next deploy.
The short name
The short name is {label}.{pool domain} with no service or deployment in front. It points
at one deployment and one service. Other deployments keep their full addresses.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Answer on the short name | Turns the short name on or off |
| Deployment | Which deployment answers. Blank means the unnamed deployment |
| Service | Which service answers. You only need it if the deployment serves web traffic from more than one service |
The short name takes effect without a redeploy. The platform updates the DNS record and relabels the stacks that gain or lose the name.
